Lula Offers to Reveal Financial Records in Challenge to Bolsonaro

(MENAFN) Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva announced Tuesday that he had asked the country's highest electoral authority to lift confidentiality protections on his banking and telephone records covering the past eight years.

Lula described the move as an effort to defend his reputation and called on his presidential rival, Flavio Bolsonaro, to agree to an equivalent disclosure of his own records.

The request was submitted to the Superior Electoral Court (TSE) and the Supreme Federal Court. Under the proposed arrangement, authorities would be permitted to examine banking, tax and communications records belonging to Lula, First Lady Janja, their five children and associated companies, provided that Flavio Bolsonaro agrees to the same transparency measures.

Bolsonaro had not immediately responded to the challenge or confirmed whether he would accept the proposed disclosure.

The move comes ahead of Brazil's presidential runoff scheduled for Oct. 25, following a first round of voting on Oct. 4 in which neither candidate secured the more than 50% of votes required to win the presidency outright.

Lula is seeking another term in office, while Flavio Bolsonaro, the son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, is competing against him for the country's top political position.

The proposed disclosure places financial transparency at the center of the candidates' political contest, with Lula presenting the request as a way to demonstrate openness and challenging his opponent to adopt the same approach. Whether Bolsonaro will agree to the reciprocal arrangement remains unclear.
